Update on Violet!

This little 18 month old cutie was rescued from the Camarillo, CA shelter. Her owner turned her in and it didn’t take us long to find out why. Violet had a noticeable limp and when our vet was able to examine her he found that Violet needed to have hip surgery to fix her. Through the generous donations of people like you, we were able to raise the funds for her surgery and she is now recovering at a foster home!

November is Adopt a Senior Pet month!

Join us and Petfinder.com as we celebrate Adopt a Senior Pet month and encourage you to consider bringing an older friend into your family. These old timers may not have that puppy play drive but they are much wiser, potty in the right place, don’t host a party when mom and dad are gone for the day, and are great at keeping you company on the couch or during a leisurely stroll now that you may not be a teenager anymore either!

Take a look at this video for more benefits that come with a senior dog!

Take a look at some of our dogs looking for homes while you are at it!

Rescue group saves animals from all over the Southland

Fiona, a Jack Russell Chihuahua puppy born in late May, rests with Pet Stop Rescue volunteer Amanda Weaver. The nonprofit animal welfare organization helps in the placement and adoption of homeless and displaced pets.

Not many volunteers would take responsibility for a homeless 2-year-old dog that would face certain death unless it underwent a $5,000 heart operation.

But that didn’t faze Simi Valley resident Penny DeRosa of Pet Stop Rescue in Simi Valley.

She took in a Bichon Frisé that the owners had given up after having a baby. When DeRosa took the dog to get spayed, the vet told her the dog had a leaking vein in the heart that would require surgery or she would die. DeRosa found an animal surgeon in Los Angeles and a vet hospital that would cut the $5,000 fee to $2,500. Pet Stop Rescue began seeking donations to proceed.

“We went to PetSmart on a Friday and set up a few dogs and put up a flier about her. A woman walked up and said, ‘Tell me this story,’ and she wrote me a check for $1,500,” said DeRosa, who had already collected $1,000.

The dog had the surgery to repair the heart problem, plus a life-threatening aneurism the vet later discovered. She will be ready for adoption in August.

“She’s in a foster home and is wonderfully healed,” DeRosa said.

That lucky dog is just one of many animals the two Simi Valley women have helped since they formed their nonprofit rescue organization six years ago. The women met years ago at a pet store when each was volunteering with different animal rescue groups and decided to start their own rescue group.

DeRosa and her volunteers foster rescued dogs and puppies at their homes and organize occasional fundraising events. Pet Stop Rescue’s biggest event, A Cause for Paws in May 2009 in Thousand Oaks, featured pet vendors and animals for adoption. The organization also participated in a multi-rescue dog adoption fair at a park in Simi Valley in October. In addition, the group takes out newspaper ads and posts animals on pet finder websites to find good homes.

Pet Stop Rescue also holds dog adoptions at Simi Valley PetSmart from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. All animals have been spayed or neutered, are healthy and current on shots, and have been fitted with a microchip. Dog adoption fees run from $150 to $300.

DeRosa volunteers full time. She has no corporate sponsors and doesn’t earn a paycheck. They sustain Pet Stop Rescue with adoption fees and donations, plus help from volunteers and an understanding husband.

“You get hooked on it,” explained DeRosa, a retired accounting manager who grew up in a family of animal lovers that had dogs, cats and horses. “It’s an emotional dedication to be able to get them a home, and to go rescue another one.”

DeRosa rescues dogs from many sources, including overcrowded shelters that euthanize animals. She takes in strays, dogs that are given up by owners, and dogs living in dangerous homes or conditions.

“I’ve got a dog that is a feral hound. The owners lost their jobs here and lost their home and moved to Texas. That’s very common,” DeRosa said.

DeRosa often rescues dogs from shelters that are full and have no choice but to euthanize animals that are not claimed or adopted. The animal shelter in Bakersfield sends out lists to rescue groups of dogs about to be euthanized in case the rescue groups can help out, she said. “In one week they destroyed over 200 dogs, from their location and from people losing their homes,” DeRosa said. “Camarillo gets so full they have to put up signs that they can’t accept any more so they need help.”

DeRosa has a special-use permit from the city to have a dog kennel at her home, where her husband, Jerry, built dog runs and helps feed and groom the rescued dogs. She’s allowed to have 25 dogs, but usually has about 15 at once. “That’s a lot to take care of,” DeRosa said.
